Riomaggiore

Riomaggiore also combines the typical Cinque Terre, but like each of the villages it has its own character. This is located here in the relatively wide main street, which – over a small square – extends to the harbor. Due to this peculiarity, the local fishermen have the opportunity to park their boats in this street, so that you can actually move between the cafes and shops between one or the other small boat.

The connection by car via the steep access road is sometimes blocked, as at the end a parking garage allows only limited numbers of visitors – but due to the particularly good connection of the local station to the town center (you only go through a short tunnel and arrive directly in the center), it is particularly recommended to travel by train from La Spezia (or one of the other Cinque Terre villages).

In addition to the typical picturesque village itself and the great view from the harbor to the sea, you have to stop by the town hall: On the façade, the painter Silvio Benedetti captured the life of local fishermen and winegrowers with impressive murals in 1994.

But we (like many other travelers) have been waiting in vain for an experience in recent years: The famous connecting path between Riomaggiore and Manarola, the Via dell’Amore, is unfortunately still closed after rockfalls. But just on the short walkable piece you can guess how fantastic this hike directly along the cliffs could be.

From Riomaggiore (as well as from the other villages) you can also go on great hikes in the vineyards above the cliffs. The difference of up to 700 meters should not be underestimated and also the necessary equipment! You can enjoy a fascinating the view but without the right footwear and also a lot to drink is not recommended!
