Dispatches from a troubled city

The City as a Novel

Every city, real or fictional, is complex and contradictory, a constant struggle for validity and coexistence. The exhibition, curated by Nika Kupyrova, draws parallels between daily life in contemporary Vienna and the fictional city of New Crobuzon from British author China Miéville’s novel Perdido Street Station.

In an experimental form of curating, the seven artistic positions are paired associatively with passages from the book. Through open-air markets, industrial zones, meeting places of the art scene and red-light districts, the exhibition takes visitors on a city tour through urban wonders. Participating artists: Aaron Amar Bhamra, Daniela Grabosch, Mario Kiesenhofer, Gašper Kunšič, Ordained Hardware, Anna Paul, Ekaterina Shapiro-Obermair
