With the Batliner Collection, one of the greatest art collectors of our time (Ɨ 2019), the ALBERTINA Museum owns one of Europe’s largest and most high-calibre collections of classical modernist painting. In 2007, this collection was handed over to the ALBERTINA Museum by Rita and Herbert Batliner, opening a new chapter in the history of the museum. From French Impressionism, Pointillism and Fauvism with works by Monet, Renoir, Degas, Cézanne, Toulouse-Lautrec, Braque and Matisse to masterpieces by the Expressionist artist groups Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter with paintings by Kirchner, Kandinsky and Nolde to the Russian avant-garde and numerous works by Pablo Picasso, the permanent exhibition presents all the groundbreaking ideas of modernism.
Herbert and Rita Batliner’s decision in 2007 to make their collection accessible to the public and to choose the ALBERTINA Museum as a partner has also enriched the museum landscape in the field of contemporary art. Since the turn of the millennium, the Batliners have also been collecting the diverse paintings of the present: Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer, Alex Katz, Imi Knoebel and Arnulf Rainer.
