Graz › Schlossberg und Uhrturm
The Schlossberg in Graz is at once a natural spectacle, local recreation area and vantage point. With a height of 123m, starting from Graz’s main square, it forms the highest natural point of the city and offers a 360° panoramic view over the city of Graz and its borders.
In springtime by fresh green, the first warm rays of sunshine, in summer by shady trees and open-air performances, in autumn by the blaze of colours, and in winter you can escape to it from dull routine in the city.
In addition to the landmark of the city of Graz, the Graz Bell Tower, you will find numerous historical buildings and sights on the Schlossberg. The Schlossberg is crisscrossed by an extensive network of paths. Without much effort you walk to the individual sights such as casemate stage, castle gate, cistern, Turkish fountain, powder tower, civic bastion, and much more.
Worth a visit is the bell tower built in 1588 (34 meters high) with the most famous bell in Graz, the “Liesl”. The bell weighs just under 5 tons and could only be moved when two blacksmiths had painstakingly constructed their own bell mechanism.
Travelharry-tip: The “Schlossbergrutsche” is the highest underground slide in the world at 64 meters. At 175 meters, visitors can take a rapid path from the Schlossberg into the Schlossberg tunnel. Right next to the Schlossberg lift, it goes downhill at up to 25 km/h through changing curves. On specially manufactured slip mats, the Graz Schlossberg slide offers a special experience for young and old for more than 40 seconds.
The cuisine is also well taken care of: Surrounded by a unique flair, several restaurants on Graz’s Schlossberg offer national and international cuisine.
