Vienna › Römermuseum, Alte Post

Cross-section of the city’s history

Vienna through the centuries – archeology in the “Alte Post” – right in the center of Vienna.

From the Bronze Age hamlet to the more urban cityscapes of Roman antiquity, the Middle Ages and the epochs that followed: The settlements in Vienna’s urban area have experienced constant change and constant growth over the centuries. Thanks to archaeological finds from excavations in the Postgasse/Dominikanerbastei area, the new archeology presentation in the “Alten Post” in the Roman Museum provides exciting insights into the checkered history of Vienna, which stretches back to the Palaeolithic Age.

The Roman Museum is located in the area of the Roman legionary camp Vindobona and shows the ruins of tribune houses of the officers’ quarters in the basement – the most important building remains of the Roman period in Vienna.
